Vest
The vest I did this year!
Here's how she turned out! I dyed the vest a darker color first, which I think made the colors pop. The skull is biting down on a heart, and has a diamondback coming out of the spinal cavity, mushrooms from the right eye, and a blue iris from the left eye socket.
The sketch I came up with after some exploration with the symbols and practicing skulls.
Laid the sketch down on the dyed material with a crayon. You can see where there was a little less dye at the top of the bucket because I was a lazy dyer.
I used ONLY fabric paint to do this project, which required a bunch of layers of paint over one another to show up strongly. See the next project for how I figured out not to be required to do this. The paint also required at least 24 hours to dry between applications, which was incredibly annoying, and why this has so many stages of progress across like a month.
Shadowed the letters and started in on the shapes of the solid colors.
I enjoyed having some outside painting time. This is where I decided to add the dragonflies, and started trying to mix the right brown for the snake. I had Very limited options because I was using a neon set of fabric paints, so all things considered I think it turned out well.
More layers of colors and definition on different components of the piece. This point was just waiting for big sections to dry so I could move on and shade.
Got the pattern of the diamondback down, very tedious. Began outlining everything with black puffy paint. Filled in the final solid sections of the flower and mushrooms.
DANGEROUSLY close to being done! You can see my palettes, aka some jar lids, and some of the mixing I was doing to get the colors I wanted.
Go With The Flow Patch
This was a present for a partner who really really loves Queens of the Stone Age. The line on the patch is from "Go With The Flow." I wanted to put some symbolism from the tarot cards The World, Judgement, and Death to complement what I think the line means, and stuck with the colors of the diamondback snake for the entire piece.
The final result - some cool gold paint for shading and the wings of the skull angel. This snake ended up a bit more detailed than the first one, and I like how it came out.
Originally, the design had hands reaching up from the Judgement card and flowers from the World card.
I got some advice from a friend and mixed the fabric paint with acrylic for this project. It came out a LOT bolder with only one coat, and the fabric paint mixed in means it's more flexible and less likely to crack.
The paint mixing also worked a lot better for this one because I got sepia tones of acrylic to mix with.
